I write to discover my soul; I read to discover yours. Why is a publication of student writing worthy of awe andcelebration? It is worthy of such response because of themiracle it represents. When students engage in writing, everything becomes more than it seems. Writers becomemore than students in seats. Poetry becomes more thanan assignment. Teachers become more than knowledgekeepers. Discovery becomes the way of life. This compilationof student writing represents an FMS habit of becomingmore. Student writing is beautiful not because of itsform or its structure, but rather because of its representationof individuality and thought. When students write, they begin the process of discovering their souls. Writerstake a risks when they compose thoughts that representhow they process the world in which they live and solidifytheir place in it. At the same time, the reader also takesa risk to embrace an opportunity to make meaning in theirown lives. This reciprocal meaning cements a relationshipbetween reader and writer that cannot be defined or fragmented. Many times, in the classroom, student success isdependent upon ability to arrange external information inclear and concise forms. We all know that life is rarelyclear and concise and the most effective method for relayingour interpretation of it typically rests within ourselves, not someone else. Transformations abound beyond thecover of this book. Words become passages to understandingfor everyone involved. To the student writers ofFairfield Middle School, thank you for this opportunity tolook at my own precious life. The beauty of your wordsinspires all.
