Count Yefimov is an old man whose life nears a slow demise. On his deathbed, he recalls his family, whom he had abandoned many years ago. Perhaps to ease his guilt during the remaining minutes, he mentions the names of three men, about whom none of his intimates had heard anything hitherto. The three men have been bequeathed the entirety of the count's wealth minutes before his death.His three sons, who habitually disparage their father at will, inhabit a tiny hut with other family members, thus making the food which they bring to the table far from adequate. In the midst of toiling on the land, which was the only inheritance from their deceased mother, of paying their apathetic landlady, of trying to feed everyone in the household, and amongst other plights, they receive the news of which every peasant has dreamt in the chimera of their miserable lives. Leaving their families with the promise of returning one day,they undertake the arduous journey to Moscow.
