Seventy one-page lessons each with an art-related vocabulary term and specific historical art references. The activities are perfect for anyone from ages 5 to 105 and may be used to teach yourself or in a classroom with an optional handout to print. All lessons have teacher notes and tips on the back. All have been used with students in two countries! Only simple, inexpensive art supplies are needed for each activity and those are listed. More expensive, archival supplies may be purchased as your expertise increases and you decide which processes are personally enjoyable. Thumbnail images of famous artworks are included, but is beneficial to study each artist's work in a larger format online or in books as possible. A glossary of terms and list of artists referenced are included. The lessons may be done in any order and repeated as often as desired. Why is art essential if you want to be smart? Why would you do anything that doesn’t come easily, naturally? Most of us do just that every day, several times a day. You get up early to make it to work on time because you want to keep that job. Laundry isn’t easy or natural but you like clean clothes. Many of you love math and its challenges; others calculate the tip and add it onto the restaurant bill because it’s necessary in a polite society. I posit that art -- making things, being creative -- is equally as crucial as math skills because creativity helps you better solve the unavoidable problems of life. Thus, if you are a stay-at-home parent and you go through the lessons in this book, you will not only become a smarter stay-at-home parent but you will solve daily problems in simple, more creative ways. If you are a student, creative solutions on tests happen more quickly. A creative business person is more likely to succeed. All are great reasons to study and practice fine arts. Some people are drawn to creative musical pursuits, others to the visual arts -- both enhance the quality of every day
