AS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE FROM DIVERSE CULTURES AND ETHNICITIES CONTINUE to increase in our educational institutions and communities, there has been a heightened need for awareness of diversity and global issues affecting women, particularly, in the Third World. A major challenge to feminist scholars in the current era of globalization is to endeavor to raise global consciousness of women’s lives through research, scholarship, and activism. This book is about championing change. It is a compilation of essays by international women in higher education on specific issues of interest and concern to them and to their constituencies. This book is unique in several ways: it locates the essays within the larger discourse on women’s empowerment for social change and allows for the understanding of the plight of women as being deeply rooted in the intersection of societal ideologies and women’s identity, locationality, positionality and then actualized in gendered social institutions and structures of power.
