From a boyhood in the pastoral farmlands of Southern Italy, to immigrating to the United States, Ben Accomandos life has been one of constant movement. In this memoir, Ben explores the themes of his life: family, education, love, service, opportunity, hard work, children, grandchildren, and friends. Ben arrived by ship in New York City in 1956 at the age of 16, speaking not a word of English. His father and sister had come before the rest of the family and set up home for them on Long Island. After briefly attending school, Ben dropped out and helped his father with his landscaping business. Then he became a cook and hair-stylist before leaving for a stint in the Army during the Cuban-Missile Crisis. Bens hairstyling career took off once he returned to Long Island, where he met his wife, Gisele. Deciding to go back to school, Ben soon became dedicated to the idea of becoming a Ph.D. in psychology, and against all odds, passed his doctoral degree through sheer dedication. A successful career in psychology followed, which leads us to today, as Ben reflects on the meaning of his life, his brushes with death, and lessons learned.With humor, pathos, and an observant eye, Ben Accomandos Images, Memories and Emotions is the thoughtfully told story of one mans life.Dr. Ben Accomando is a New York and Florida licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in clinical and school psychology. Dr. Accomando worked as a school psychologist at the Port Washington school District; was the Director of Psychological Services at the State University at Farmingdale; was the president and CEO of a large private mental health center for over 20 years; and trained/supervised doctoral level interns during those years. Finally, he was an adjunct professor at Hofstra University. Married to Gisele for 48 years, Dr. Accomando is the proud father of Lina and Denice, and the grandfather of five. Ben lives in Oceanside, New York.
