Whether you are a Christian or not, a number of things hit you when you first enter a medieval church. It could be the slightly musty smell that many ancient churches possess, or a sense of the presence of God, or a wonderment at the faith and technology of our ancestors, who built so many wonderful cathedrals and churches. Yet soon you may be greeted by the wonders of medieval stained glass. The light, from outside, transforms the stained glass into an almost living creation as it dances on the floor before you. When we think of medieval stained glass, we tend to think of York, of Canterbury, or of Norfolk. But Suffolk has beautiful medieval stained glass too and, sadly, it is underrated. I have tried to describe the medieval stained glass using some 20 fabulous churches. Fabulous both in the usual sense, but also in the sense that their stained glass has something to say to us. Nowadays we do not immediately understand what these medieval windows are trying to tell us, so I have attempted to redress this issue by simply translating them in a non-academic manner. I want to Let the Stained Glass Speak to my readers. Although I have written this book for people who live in, or go to church in, Suffolk, I have also written it for anyone who loves stained glass. The book is highly illustrated with some 245 images in 280 pages of text. So, without more ado, Let the Stained Glass Speak!.
