Counting out defiant behaviors like arguing, begging, whining, and temper tantrums gives the child the opportunity to decide to stop before they face a discipline. The key for parents is to avoid over-talking and showing too much emotion during the interaction with the child. By doing this, the parent takes the authority in the situation, and the child will not be able to enjoy the power that can be won when they get a rise out of the parent. The goal is to teach kids to be more self soothing, self controlled and self reliant. This is the type of child we all want to send out into the world.
