This book is a series of essays on women playwrights over the past 1,000 years, which have been presented as staged readings. Women have been writing plays and contributing to the Western Theatrical Canon, but even female Theatre professionals, let alone the population at large, are unaware of the full story of women’s foundational heritage in the field. The goal of presenting these plays in not only to re-introduce the playwrights to modern audiences but to motivate producers to see these scripts as viable for contemporary production. The essays in this book serve as educational tools for an expanded audience of theatre students, practitioners, and historians. The program ON HER SHOULDERS was created in early 2013 and continues to produce staged readings under the auspices of New Perspectives Theatre Company.
