A most disagreeable woman dies from a fall on the third-floor stairs of her rooming house.  The police deem it an accident.  Carley, the woman’s granddaughter, is not so sure.  She suspects murder.  As she takes on the responsibilities of running the rooming house, she wonders which among her seven boarders and two employees might have done the deed.  She confides her thoughts to the local policeman, Terry.  In the tradition of Miss Marple, the sleuthing is nuanced.  As the great three-story, Washington, D.C. rooming house gets opened to sunlight, fresh paint, and clearing out by Carley, generational secrets are unearthed, murder is discovered, and Carley finds answers to her painful past and freedom to love and marry.
