The first major CIA operation was the rigging of the 1948 Italian elections, using the pro-fascist Mafia to assassinate the Italian center-left, just as Mussolini did. The same pattern has repeated itself in the succeeding decades in Guatemala, Vietnam, Bolivia, Peru, Italy and Afghanistan, which are all discussed in detail.
