Chief Of The Pilgrims is a 1857 biographical sketch of William Brewster (1568-1644) written by Ashbel Steele. Brewster was an English official and passenger aboard the Mayflower, an English ship that transported early Pilgrims to the New World in 1620. The ship has since become an important part of North American history and culture, as well as the subject of innumerable works of art, plays, films, poems, songs, books, etc. Due to his education, Brewster was appointed senior elder and the leader of the Plymouth Colony and became an important figure in the early settlement of the United States.
