PREFACE In the preparation of this text we have become indebted to many individuals. We shall not attempt to name all of them here, hut we must mention some who have been especially helpful. Dr. Max L. Basemann has given advice on Portuguese pronunciation. Dr. Sidney E. Ekblaw has made useful suggestions on Latin American geography. Mr. Clarence Senior has assisted with the section on Indian civilization at the time of the Conquest. Dr. Ella P. Levett has helped with the maps and illustrations. Many experienced teachers have contributed practical advice. Various publishers have kindly permitted us to use the quota- tions that appear in the narrative. But we must assume responsibility for both the defects and the merits of the volume. We hope it may prove interesting and useful as well as accurate.
