The micro-economic study of Ogoniland is designed as a very simple Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) focusing on three dimensions of development that can serve as catalyst for the regeneration of the area namely: economic growth, livelihood and sustainable development. In this enquiry, an attempt is made to look at the indicators of economic growth, livelihood and sustainable development in Ogoniland focusing on the factors that militate against them and how they can be addressed. The research team visited the four local governments, carried out observatory tours, interviewed local residents and conducted inclusive focus group discussions (FGDs). The study revealed that combination of factors such as lack of access to modern infrastructure, lack of access to capital, unsustainable agricultural practices, low level of education are contributing to low level of economic growth in the area. Low level of education, in particular, is accountable for the high level of unemployment and lack of skills for entrepreneurial development and employability. Lack of access to energy and continued use of wood fuel is leading to further deforestation of the already devastated land. Negative perception arising from the legacy of historical restiveness in the area is not helping the development credential of Ogoniland. All these are explored in this high insightful report.
