Prior to the 1940s, football was the leading athletic activity, and very little emphasis was given to basketball and baseball. However, in the early 1940s, a new movement started, with basketball and baseball leading the way. Some called it a revival. It started with our your people seeking and finding encouragement from their elders. It had a meagre beginning. There were some thoughtfdul coaches and community leaders who became aware of the developing interest in those sports, and they led the movement. The interest spread like wildfire, with facilities appearing and serving hundreds of young men. Opposition arose to this movement over concerns it would harm our major sport - football -- in public schools and colleges. Yet these two sports made great progress fom coast to coast. Basketball and baseball began to have their rightful place in the athletic world. I called it - the athletic revolution. - Coach Mel Barborak.
