A Life's JourneyEdward BendikI was born in Slovakia, in Eastern Europe, in 1932.  During my first seven years I was nurtured by loving grandparents and many close relatives. My parents and I settled in America in 1940.  From that point on my life changed dramatically. The depression was still prevalent. Daily headlines reminded my parents what their family members were experiencing under Nazi rule.  They had little time for me, emotionally or socially. I hung-out with several classmates whose loving households were welcoming. As a youngster I could not comprehend the “survivors’ guilt” syndrome my folks experienced throughout the war years and thereafter.I don’t recall ever receiving an embrace from my father nor much tenderness from my mother. It was not until my 40’s that I began to understand the pressures in their lives. It was only then that I began the process of forgiveness.About ten years ago, after my parents were no longer living, I became interested in genealogy and began searching documents, photos and visiting internet sites for relevant information. Over the years, and with help from family and friends, I accumulated much information, which became the source for this memoir.Writing LAST TRAIN OUT has been difficult and emotionally draining. However, I felt an obligation to give my children and eight grandchildren an understanding of their family history, as well as to publicly mourn the six million of my fellow Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
